NCIS Officially Confirms Timothy McGee’s Exit Path

In one of the most shocking reveals of NCIS in a long time, CBS officially confirms Timothy McGee’s future, leading to him having to leave the show and agency. Just two episodes in the 2026-2027 cycle and the premier procedural has tackled so much — from Michael Weatherly’s return as Tony Dinozzo to finally getting rid of Gabriel LaRoche. While NCIS season 24, episode 1, “Wayward Son,” was meant to set up a new future for the series, episode 2, “Clean Slate” sees everyone settle into it.

Amid the chaos of this season’s opener, one character that didn’t get as much focus on was Timothy McGee. While not an original cast member, he serves as the longest-running active agent in the show. Ever since Sean Murray’s character passed on the chance to head MCRT after Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ retirement, questions about his NCIS future have become a big part of his arc. He was previously passed up to be the assistant director, and then again, now as the NCIS director — a job that has been awarded to Dinozzo. Surprisingly, CBS finally confirms what lies ahead for McGee, and that would, unfortunately, involve him leaving the orange walls of Navy Yard.

Timothy McGee Is Being Set Up To Be The Secretary Of Navy

While Dinozzo being the new NCIS director is a great way to incorporate Weatherly back into the show, it creates a couple of new issues, including making McGee’s position in the agency worse. Since passing on taking over Gibbs’ role, there has always been some sort of expectation that he would eventually become the organization’s top brass, and when Director Leon Vance was untimely killed, it presented the perfect narrative opportunity to do it. Dinozzo getting the gig instead is a major theme in “Clean Slate,” emphasizing how the situation worsens McGee’s stagnation. That’s until the final moment of NCIS season 24, episode 2, when Weatherly’s character confirms that his former probie is being saved to become the eventual Secretary of the Navy.

For a while, questions about why McGee didn’t get the assistant director’s job when he was very much qualified for it haunted NCIS. The chaotic arc of LaRoche made it worse, especially when he started gunning for the spot that Vance vacated. Per Dinozzo, SecNav Helen Marsh has apparently been quietly setting him up for a much bigger promotion. This is the first time that this matter has been brought up in the series. It’s curious if Vance knew about it before he died, but it’s clear that this is news to McGee. Unfortunately, since the bombshell drops at the very last minute of “Clean Slate,” NCIS isn’t able to properly tackle the immediate aftermath of this revelation.

One would be hard-pressed to find anyone who would oppose any kind of promotion for McGee in NCIS. Arguably, he is Gibbs’ best agent, because he has been able to learn directly from his mentor and recognize which of his ways are right and which ones are wrong. No one in the agency is far more qualified for the job of directorship than him — even with Dinozzo back. Unfortunately, McGee getting his much-deserved promotion means that he will have to leave NCIS altogether. Previously, taking over Vance’s job would have meant just leaving the field and MCRT in general, but if Marsh gets her way, Murray’s character won’t even be working in the same building anymore, as he would have to move quarters to the Pentagon.
