Life inside the vice president’s residence may sound like something from a movie: a historic home, round-the-clock security, political meetings and a family constantly surrounded by public attention. But according to Usha Vance, one of the most memorable moments of the day for her children is surprisingly ordinary.

It involves a book, a bedtime routine and a father who, despite one of the busiest political schedules in the country, still makes time to sit down with his children.

During a recent interview, Usha revealed a small but intimate detail about family life with Vice President JD Vance. She said JD currently reads The Hobbit to their two younger children as part of their bedtime routine. The book has become such a regular part of their evenings that the children are deeply invested in the story.

“JD’s reading The Hobbit to our two younger kids, and they’re so into it right now,” Usha said during an appearance on Fox News’ Fox & Friends. When host Rachel Campos-Duffy expressed surprise that the vice president could still find time for reading with his children, Usha responded that he does.

For a family living under an extraordinary level of public scrutiny, the revelation offers a glimpse into a much more familiar side of their lives.

The Vances currently live at the vice president’s residence on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C. The property serves as the official residence of the vice president and has been the Vance family’s home during JD’s time in office.

And while the setting may be anything but ordinary, Usha’s description of their nighttime routine sounds remarkably familiar to millions of parents.

The Hobbit, J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic fantasy novel, is now apparently part of that nightly ritual for the Vance children. The timing is particularly notable because the Vance family has recently grown again.

JD and Usha welcomed their fourth child, a son named Alec Neel Vance, in July 2026. Alec joined their three older children: Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel. The birth was historically notable because Alec became the first child born to a sitting U.S. vice president in more than 150 years.

That new addition also helps explain why bedtime may look a little different in the Vance household these days.

Usha explained that with a newborn in the family, JD has been handling parts of the children’s bedtime routine. Rather than allowing his demanding political schedule to completely take over family life, he appears to have maintained at least one predictable moment with his children: story time before bed.

For Mirabel, the youngest of the older three children, that means growing up with a childhood that is difficult to separate from the unusual circumstances surrounding her family.

Born in December 2021, Mirabel is the Vances’ only daughter. She has appeared publicly with her parents and brothers at several high-profile events, including the family’s 2025 trip to India. Yet much of her everyday life remains private.

That makes Usha’s comments about bedtime particularly interesting.

There are no cameras at story time. No political speeches. No campaign events. No public appearances.

Instead, there is simply a parent reading to his children.

Usha has also demonstrated a strong interest in childhood literacy. In March 2026, she launched Story Time with the Second Lady, a children’s podcast centered on reading. She described reading with her children as one of the highlights of her day and said the project was inspired by her longstanding love of books.

That makes the family’s current bedtime routine seem even more fitting.

While Usha has created a public platform around the importance of reading, JD appears to be making reading part of the family’s private routine as well. And now, instead of simply hearing about books through a podcast, his own children are experiencing the tradition at home.

For Mirabel and her siblings, it may ultimately be one of the most ordinary memories of an extraordinary childhood.

Years from now, they may remember political events, official residences and traveling with their parents around the world. But they may also remember sitting together at night while their father turned the pages of The Hobbit.

That contrast is what makes Usha’s revelation so intriguing.
