Susan Dey’s First Heartbreak Was David Cassidy — But Another Man Taught Her What Lasting Love Really Means ❤️
Susan Dey once believed she had found love with the teen idol millions of girls adored. But her first heartbreak taught her a painful lesson — and years later, a different man would change the way she understood love. ![]()
When Susan was just 18, she had no experience in acting or singing. She was working as a model when she landed the role of Laurie Partridge in *The Partridge Family*.
The show premiered in 1970 and quickly became a hit, turning Susan into one of America’s most recognizable young television stars.
Her on-screen brother, Keith Partridge, was played by David Cassidy, who became a major teen idol. Fans went wild for him, a phenomenon he once described as “mass hysteria.”
But Susan had feelings for him, too.
Behind the scenes, she developed a crush on her co-star. However, the relationship she hoped for did not unfold as she might have imagined.
The two did not begin dating until after the show ended in 1974. Their romance was short-lived, and Cassidy eventually called it off.
Years later, he shared private details about their relationship in his memoir, including his view that Susan had been too innocent for him.
For Susan, the experience was painful. She reportedly decided she would never see him again and later declined to attend a *Partridge Family* reunion.
Still, her life was about far more than a teenage romance.
Susan continued to build a successful acting career, eventually earning a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Grace Van Owen in the legal drama *L.A. Law*.
Her personal life also took a different direction.
In 1976, she married talent agent Lenny Hirshan, who was 25 years older than her. The couple had a daughter before their marriage ended in 1981.
Susan was candid about her attraction to older men, explaining her perspective in a 1988 interview.
“I’m attracted to older men simply because they’ve learned how to get what they want,” she said.
That same year, however, she found a relationship that would last far longer than her previous romances.
In 1988, Susan married television producer Bernard Sofronski in a small, private ceremony. And according to the actress, he helped her see love in an entirely new way.
Speaking to *Woman’s Own* that year, she explained what made their relationship different.
“Bernie has helped me understand that love involves give and take. I never understood love until I met him. It makes life so much easier when you’re with someone you can trust,” she said.
Those words offered a glimpse into the relationship that would become a lasting part of her life.
David Cassidy died in 2017, leaving behind a legacy as one of the defining teen idols of his generation.
Susan, meanwhile, gradually stepped away from the public eye. Now 73, she has kept her private life largely out of the spotlight and is reported to be living quietly in New York with Bernard.
Their marriage has now lasted 38 years.
For many fans, Susan will always be remembered as Laurie Partridge, the young woman who rode around on a colorful bus with her fictional family.
But her own love story took a very different path.
The boy who once captured her heart became part of her past. Bernard helped her discover that lasting love wasn’t about the excitement of a teenage crush, but about trust, understanding, and learning to stand beside someone through life.
And that, it seems, was the kind of love Susan had been searching for all along. ![]()
