NCIS actors Mark Harmon and Michael Weatherly will reunite as Leroy Jethro Gibbs and Tony DiNozzo on the Oct. 20 episode of NCIS: ORIGINS, their first onscreen meeting as the characters in 10 years.

“My personal hope and vision for what could happen down the road in this season would be that we do see some reunions and both emotional and action-packed and fun,” Weatherly told TV Insider before CBS announced the reunion.

Now that wish has a date on the calendar. Variety reported that Harmon and Weatherly, who worked together for 13 seasons on NCIS, will share the screen again after last appearing together in the original show’s Season 13 finale.

Gibbs isn’t returning just to reminisce: someone has shot him, and he needs help finding answers. He returns to the agency’s Washington, D.C., headquarters to enlist Tony after unknown assailants attacked him in the NCIS: ORIGINS season premiere.

Tony, meanwhile, has a different place in the office these days. Weatherly returned to NCIS in its Season 24 premiere Oct. 6, and his character has moved into the agency’s leadership — a change that gives this homecoming more to work with than familiar faces.

CBS confirmed the reunion for Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, with streaming on Paramount+. Harmon, also an executive producer of NCIS: ORIGINS, appears in every episode this season as a present-day mystery pulls Gibbs back toward his Camp Pendleton days in the 1990s.

That means the prequel isn’t leaving its younger Gibbs behind to make room for the reunion. Actor Austin Stowell still plays him in the earlier timeline, while Harmon portrays the older Gibbs and narrates the series.

The Oct. 20 episode has another familiar character on the case, too. CBS’ episode description says actor Adam Campbell returns as Dr. Donald Mallard, better known as Ducky, to help the 1992 team investigate a young Marine’s murder on a beach.

For Tony, the return is also a test of how much he has grown. NCIS showrunner Steven D. Binder discussed his new leadership role in an Oct. 6 interview with Us Weekly, explaining that Tony would bring his own approach to the job.

“He’s unconventional for sure, but he’s going to be professional and he’s going to be effective,” Binder said of Tony’s leadership.

The new role also changes his relationship with Timothy McGee, played by actor Sean Murray. Tony used to treat McGee as the younger colleague, but Binder pointed out that McGee now has more experience serving as director, having already held the job on an interim basis.

“Who’s the probie now is the way to think about it,” Binder said.

Both men are parents now, Binder noted, another shift from their old big-brother, little-brother dynamic. Tony comes back with years away from the agency behind him, rather than simply picking up his old position.

Gibbs and Tony’s meeting will bring those changes into the same room. The former boss needs help; his onetime colleague now has a leadership role of his own — and an attack on Gibbs gives them an immediate reason to work together again.
