Taylor Swift may have entered her relationship with Travis Kelce knowing little about football, but the pop superstar has apparently become a serious student of the game.

Kelce, 36, opened up about his wife’s football evolution during the Sept. 18 episode of his and brother Jason Kelce’s New Heights podcast, revealing just how dramatically her understanding of the sport has changed since they started dating in 2023.

The conversation came while actor Tom Cruise, 64, discussed spending time with Swift at the Kansas City Chiefs’ season opener against the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium on Sept. 14.

Cruise recalled talking with Swift about her first date with Travis and the way she initially understood football. According to Cruise, Swift had wondered what it was like for players to compete against each other and physically hit one another on the field.

Travis laughed at the memory, describing how different his wife’s understanding of football is now.

These days, Swift can apparently follow plays and recognize penalties as they happen.

Kelce explained that she now notices flags on the field and can identify calls such as defensive holding and encroachment. Her transformation has been so noticeable that even he seemed surprised by how much she has learned.

Jason, 38, also remembered seeing Swift’s growing interest in football during an earlier game and said one of the things he enjoyed was watching her ask questions and genuinely try to understand the sport.

Cruise had his own experience with Swift’s football knowledge during the Chiefs game, saying she was essentially schooling him as the plays unfolded.

For Travis, that curiosity is part of what makes Swift’s approach to football so familiar to him. He compared her desire to understand every small detail of a sport with the way she approaches her own creative work.

He explained that understanding all the individual pieces of a team, sport or production can make the overall experience more enjoyable because you begin to appreciate how everything comes together.

That same attention to detail, Travis noted, is something Swift brings to directing her music videos. From the story and rhythm to the visuals, he said she becomes deeply immersed in the creative process, and the finished result reflects that commitment.

Swift and Kelce have now been together for three years. The couple married on July 3, marking a new chapter after their highly publicized romance began in 2023.

From learning the basics of Travis’ sport to recognizing penalties in real time, Swift’s football journey has clearly come a long way.
