He Spent $2.25 Million on Something Bigger Than Himself. 💛
Most people know Rick Steves as the famous travel guide who spent decades showing the world how to explore Europe.
But in December 2025, he made a very different kind of journey.
A hygiene center near Seattle that served people experiencing homelessness was about to close after the property it operated on was put up for sale.
The center provided something many of us take for granted: showers, hot meals, clean clothes, and laundry services.
So Rick Steves stepped in.
He bought the building for $2.25 million.
No grand publicity tour. No business deal.
He simply described it as “a gift to my homeless neighbors.”
And he didn’t stop there.
The facility is now being upgraded from 2 showers to 6, with new washers and dryers, improved plumbing and electrical systems, and a renovated garage that will provide space for haircuts and bicycle repairs.
The center serves around 700 people.
Steves has called the purchase a statement against what he sees as the forces contributing to homelessness, while arguing that communities should invest more in services that protect vulnerable people.
For a man whose career was built around helping people discover the world, perhaps his most meaningful journey was helping the people living right next door.
$2.25 million can buy a lot of things.
Rick Steves chose to buy people dignity, warmth, cleanliness, and hope.
And sometimes, the greatest journey isn’t about where you go.
