Dolly Parton’s final wishes were remarkably simple — and deeply personal.

Before her death at age 80, the country music legend reportedly asked her family to make sure she was laid to rest in a “beautiful bed of plush cotton,” a poignant request that reflected her desire for comfort after a lifetime spent beneath the weight of elaborate costumes and rhinestones.

Her nephew and head of security, Bryan Seaver, revealed the detail Tuesday while announcing Parton’s death in an emotional Instagram video.

“After a life wearing heavy rhinestones, she finally deserves to be comfortable and have some rest,” Seaver said.

Seaver described the announcement as an “honor” mixed with “absolute pride and great sadness,” while imagining Parton being reunited with the loved ones who had gone before her — including her husband, Carl Dean, her parents and others who had long awaited seeing her again.

But alongside the grief, Seaver emphasized the extraordinary legacy Parton leaves behind.

He said she “opened doors for generations of singers, songwriters, musicians and dreamers” around the world, adding that her example made people believe that anything was possible.

“Sadness lies with us, not with Dolly,” he said.

Parton’s representatives similarly remembered her as an artist whose influence extended far beyond her music, describing a “rhinestone life” that had shone brightly for the world while highlighting her wit, warmth and kindness.

Her death came after months of health concerns.

According to the information reported by Page Six and TMZ, Parton had been hospitalized at Nashville’s Vanderbilt University Medical Center with reported kidney and autoimmune issues in the days before her passing. She had also been dealing with health problems for much of the previous year, including canceling appearances and ultimately abandoning plans for a Las Vegas residency.

Just days before her death, Parton had spoken publicly about her health, reflecting that she had sometimes neglected her own problems while caring for her husband, who died in March 2025.

She continued reassuring fans that her conditions were treatable and thanked them for standing by her.

Her final public appearance came in late June at the opening of Dolly’s Tennessean Travel Stop in Tennessee.

Now, as fans mourn one of country music’s most recognizable figures, her family is left to carry forward the legacy of a woman who spent decades turning music, humor and compassion into something much larger than fame.

And perhaps fittingly, after a lifetime of dazzling stages and heavy rhinestones, Dolly’s final request was simply to rest comfortably.
