TWO COUNTRY NETWORKS PULLED HIS VIDEO. ONE OFFERED TO PUT IT BACK IF GARTH BROOKS ADDED A DISCLAIMER. HE REFUSED — AND MONTHS LATER, THE CMA NAMED IT VIDEO OF THE YEAR. In 1991, Garth Brooks released the video for “The Thunder Rolls.” The song itself told of a cheating husband coming home in a storm. But the video went further, showing the wife as a victim of domestic violence and carrying the story toward a violent ending. The Nashville Network banned it the day after its release. CMT pulled it soon afterward. TNN then offered Brooks a way back onto the air: record a disclaimer to accompany the video. Brooks refused to film it. He believed the story should stand as he had made it. He told the network it could add its own disclaimer, but he would not change his vision. Then something unexpected happened. Women’s shelters thanked Capitol for bringing attention to domestic violence. Radio stations organized screenings. VH1 began showing the video just six days after TNN banned it. On October 2, 1991, the country music establishment delivered its final answer. “The Thunder Rolls” won CMA Music Video of the Year.
