Icebergs float like beautiful ice sculptures
Since 2003, photographer Olaf Otto Becker has been documenting the deterioration of Greenland’s glaciers and ice sheet.
He navigated alone through thick fog and unpredictable waters in a rubber raft. She traveled along 4,000 kilometers of coastline between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. when the summer light illuminated the landscape and used long exposures to capture the views.
In an article at PetaPixel , Becker details his grueling excursions. In one of them he was hit by an iceberg that knocked him into the water, broke his rib and caused a concussion. He also explains the urgency of documenting the changes that the glaciers are undergoing.
He recounts how a Greenland town was swept away by the sea. And that the ice rocks that break off from the permafrost not only affect the island, they affect the planet and many coasts can suffer the same fate.
Here are some images of his ‘Broken Line’ project.
