Norman’s confirmation came two days after the independent daily newsletter Status reported that her contract had expired and would not be renewed on Thursday, April 2.

“Janai has known since early March she wasn’t going to be renewed and has been on the air for weeks, completely professional with no issues,” a source with knowledge of the situation tells PEOPLE. “But when the story leaked online, she was abruptly taken off the air. Her contract is not up until early May.”

Norman previously worked as a correspondent for ABC News and co-anchor for World News Now and America This Morning. She also helped launch the second hour of GMA on Saturdays in 2019.

Her exit comes after 15 years with the network, where she began as an intern with NewsOne in 2011.
