Kayce Dutton Fights to Leave Yellowstone (and His Wife?) Behind in Y: Marshals Spinoff Trailer
“I fought everyday to get out from under the weight of Yellowstone. I lost my teammates, my parents, even my brothers,” Luke Grimes’
character declares in the voiceover. “I know that sometimes good men have to do bad things. But I’m trying to find a new beginning.”

That fresh start comes as Kayce joins the U.S. Marshals to fight gangs, cartels and other dangerous elements. But lest Kayce descend into the dark side of his new job — “The devil’s running free out there,” his pal tells him — Thomas Rainwater reminds Kayce, “Duttons are all born with a killer instinct, but you’re not a killer, Kayce. You’re a protector.”

The first look gives us a glimpse at Kayce’s son, Tate, but his wife, Monica (played by Kelsey Asbille), is notably and worrisomely absent. Could viewers be in for a sad surprise (a divorce) or a tragic twist (death)?
In the upcoming offshoot, “with the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals,” reads the official description. In his new job, Dutton combines “his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”
Who Else Will Star in Y: Marshals?
Yellowstone alums Gil Birmingham, Mo Brings Plenty and Brecken Merrill will reprise their roles as Thomas Rainwater, Mo, and Tate Dutton.
Logan Marshall-Green (And Just Like That…, Big Sky, pictured below) joins the Yellowstone universe as Pete Calvin, Kayce’s friend from his time in the military. Other series regulars include Arielle Kebbel (Rescue: Hi-Surf, The Vampire Diaries), Ash Santos (Pulse, Mayor of Kingstown) and Tatanka Means (Ransom Canyon), all playing U.S. Marshals. Additionally, Brett Cullen (Ransom Canyon, Person of Interest) will recur as Harry Gifford, the head of the U.S. Marshals in Montana.
It’s very likely that some characters from the mothership series will make an appearance on the offshoot. “There’s going to be some familiar faces,” Grimes told People, “but there’s going to be a lot of new faces, too.” Hopefully, those familiar characters include Kayce’s family — his wife Monica (played by Kelsey Asbille) and their son Tate (Brecken Merrill) — who were finally living out their happily ever after when Yellowstone concluded last December.
A series centered around Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, starring Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, is coming to Paramount+. The Dutton Ranch (working title) “is a testament to the peace [Beth and Rip] sought, fought for, and nearly died for, as they’ve come to cherish their 7,000-acre land,” Deadline describes. “With tough times and stiff competition, Beth and Rip do what they must to survive, all while ensuring Carter becomes the man he’s supposed to be.” The cast also includes Yellowstone alum Finn Little as Beth and Rip’s son Carter, and Oscar nominee Annette Bening.
