Local Man Arrested for Pretending to Be Rock Legend Sammy Hagar
Mount Vernon, OH — A 58-year-old man from Summersville was taken into custody yesterday after allegedly impersonating rock icon Sammy Hagar at multiple local businesses — including two banks and a vape shop.
Police identified the suspect as Ronnie Putnam, who reportedly introduced himself as “the real Red Rocker” and attempted to open new accounts under the name Sammy Hagar Enterprises, LLC.
Witnesses said Putnam even broke into an a cappella version of Hagar’s 1984 hit “I Can’t Drive 55” to prove his identity.
“He mentioned he was on tour but needed to cash a royalty check,” said one bank teller. “He had red sunglasses on and smelled faintly of margarita mix — honestly, for a second, I almost believed him.”
Authorities were called after Putnam presented a homemade ID labeled “Sammy Hagar, Rock God.” Officers arrested him at the scene and charged him with fraud and disorderly conduct.
When questioned by police, Putnam reportedly shouted,
“I CAN’T DRIVE TO JAIL!”
He is currently being held pending a court appearance.
