1. The ostrich is known to be the largest flightless bird in the world.

2. The name of this bird comes from the word « estrutz », derived from Latin and Greek. It translates as “sparrow (as big as a) camel.”

6. When they are born they measure between 25 and 30 cm in height and weigh about 900 g . Adult males can reach 2.74 or even 3 meters in height, and weigh around 180 Kg.

15. In the wild they live for around 30 years, but in captivity there are specimens that have reached 100 years.

The popular belief that, when faced with danger, the ostrich hides its head under the ground is false . What they do do is lower their heads to ground level to go unnoticed and look like a bush. However, the most common is that they run away or attack with their powerful legs. This same behavior is followed by the chicks when they are in danger. Therefore, the phrase “hide your head like an ostrich” is unfounded.

17. The ostrich is a herbivorous animal with the ability to digest fiber. Some consider it omnivorous, as it can eat small animals and arthropods. It has even been observed consuming carrion remains abandoned by carnivorous animals. In their voracity they can ingest stones, rocks or minerals, which, retained in their body, help to grind food.
