Yesterday two American astronauts splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico aboard a SpaceX capsule, ending the space company’s first manned mission together with NASA.

1. Astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley ‘s journey was their first from US soil since 2011 , the year NASA’s shuttle program ended .
2.For the past 9 years, American astronauts had to pay $80 million per seat on Russian Soyuz rockets that took them into space. But with this historic milestone, they will be able to go into space without the help of Russia.
3. It was also the first time a crew had been launched into space by a private space company . The first failed attempt was on May 27 and was canceled due to bad weather in Florida.
4. It was the first water landing (aquatamiento, or ditching) for American astronauts since the Apollo-Soyuz , a joint mission between the United States and the Soviet Union in 1975, which fell into the Pacific Ocean, near Hawaii.
5. It is the first time that astronauts have landed in the Gulf of Mexico .
6. Astronauts Behnken and Hurley were woken up by an audio recording of their children after sleeping for 8 of the 19 hours it takes to return to Earth from the International Space Station (ISS).
7. They spent 62 days on the ISS. They circled the Earth 1,024 times. They studied 114 hours of research and watched several space vehicles enter and leave the Space Station. In fact, The Behnken Astronaut posted a photo of one of the 16 sunrises they saw daily .
8. SpaceX became the first private company to launch NASA astronauts into space.
9. Now Elon Musk’s company is certified for commercial space travel after the successful and historic Crew Dragon Demo-2 mission .
