The rock-shaped amphitheater in China is the ‘shrine of sound’
Planetacurioso.com – Open Architecture has built a concert hall in a mountainous valley, a two-hour drive north of Beijing. The design looks like a strange prehistoric rock that fell long ago.
The Beijing-based studio looked at the ancient rock formations when designing the irregular shape of the ‘Chapel of Sound’.
The building has been constructed from concrete and local mineral-rich rocks have been added to give it that special touch.
Although designed to capture a unique and moving experience of music in the heart of nature, the architects wanted people to simply relax and listen to the sound of nature . Sure, when there are no concerts.
The resort overlooks the Great Wall ruins from the Ming dynasty era.

The architects investigated the behavior of sound. They were drawn to the ways sound reverberates in natural spaces like caves . Although they had designed theaters and concert halls, this project was different in that they did not want to add sound-absorbing materials.
In the end, in collaboration with acoustic engineers, they decided to use the openings as sound absorption areas , also providing a connection to the previous environment.
The result is fantastic.
