‘Strange’ Giant Ghost Jellyfish Filmed Off California Coast
The first time this gelatinous ghostly being was discovered was in 1889. Since then they have only been seen about 100 times. In November 2021, MBARI researchers were able to record it in 4K.

The jellyfish that looks like a floating hat in the deep sea is more than a meter wide. It possesses four oral arms (similar to scarves) that can grow over 10 meters long.
Although not much is known about the giant ghost jellyfish, scientists believe that they use their oral arms to catch prey and bring it to their mouths. Additionally, the strange creature propels itself through deep water with periodic pulses in its head.

It is extremely rare to see a giant ghost jellyfish.
Why is it difficult to see them? Mainly it is because it lives in deep waters. It is curious, because it is such a large animal and that it lives in waters all over the planet (with the exception of the Arctic), but it is not always easy to observe one.
In November 2021, researchers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) were able to record a giant ghost jellyfish with the help of a remotely operated vehicle 990 meters deep in Monterey Bay. Monterey.
Before this technology, scientists used trawls to find and study deep-sea species. It worked with some. But not with jellyfish. The problem was that they turned into sticky substances in the nets, unlike fish, crustaceans and squid that came out intact.
This brainless creature and its behavior can now be observed in its natural habitat.
